One of a very few family owned and operated NASCAR speedways, the Pocono Raceway is located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. This 2.5 mile super speedway is one of very few tracks that are not owned by International Speedway Corporation or Speedway Motor Sports. Pocono Raceway is owned and operated by the Mattioli family which opened in 1974 and in the early years suffered many financial difficulties. With moral support and continuous encouragement from Bill France, the Mattioli’s totally rebuilt Pocono Raceway. The first NASCAR race hosted by Pocono Raceway was won by Richard Petty on August 4, 1974.
Pocono Raceway has a unique design unlike that of any other speedway. Each turn has a different degree of banking which was modeled after three different speedways and the three straights are not the same distance in length. It could be called a tri-oval, but the turns are so severe it is almost a triangle. Due to the sharp turns at Pocono Raceway, the speeds tend to be much lower than at our super speedways and therefore restrictor plates are not required by NASCAR. Some teams refer to Pocono Raceway as a roval and others consider it to be a modified road course.
Pocono Raceway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup races just weeks apart, the Pocono 500 is in June and the Pennsylvania 500 is in August.
